"Expect the unexpected" is how XAT is defined by most of mba entrance gurus. This year was different, not because XAT had some surprises thrown in but because surprises in XAT no longer surprise you.
I beleive that the mix of centres allocated for a particular MBA
entrance exam kind of tells you about the standard of that particular
exam and also about the seriousness and intellect of exam takers. My
center was dholpur house, which by far was better than any other
entrance exam. Probably thats why XAT 2008 paper setters compensated it
with a bad paper. Paper was difficult, tougher than CAT 2007.
XAT 2008, as 'expected' had three sections. Verbal, Quant and Logical reasoning. Verbal was not very tough but yes it was definately above average. Parajumbles were difficult and fill in the blanks were tricky. One glance was enough for deciding to skip the question. RC passages were like fresh air and Verbal logic was simple too, Though the caselets in verbal logic made them a bit difficult. CL considers 11+ marks in XAT 2008 verbal to be a good score.
Quant / DI section was tough one. But, if you have a good eye and you are skilled at picking questions than you could have have scored in the section. There were lot of trick questions. DI was bad because of the way they had framed the questions. I, actually couldnt understand Jamshedpur electronics question. It was after only the paper was over that I realised that it wa actually a sitter. CL considers 8+ to be a decent enough score. That makes it 19+.
Logical reasoning in XAT 2008 was not your usual LR section. Most of the questions were " which one is false / true" types, which meant that you have to go through each and every option. I think the questions on decision making were pretty easy but then arent these questions very subjective and as an individual one can have his or her own personal opinion about a particular situation. I guess thats why you can never be sure with these questions. Probably, thats why CL thinks 9+ will be a good score in LR XAT 2008.
Overall a score in excess of 32 will be a good score. For once, I can agree with the pundits. Even I think an overall score of 30+ will be a good bet.
And how can I not comment on the most absurd, vague, stupid and bla bla essay topic of the millenium. XAT 2008 thinks gender imbalace will lead to Third world war. How and why? ask them, it was essay topic for XAT 2008.
Edit :
CL has posted their review of XAT 2008. According to them 34+ will be cut off. CL's review is very close to my post.
According to CF 34+ will be a safe score. CF thinks LR was easy.
